We all know that houses in England and Wales can be expensive, but the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) have revealed exactly how expensive really are, right down to the square metre.
The research shows from the ONS revealed that on average, across England and Wales, our homes cost us an average of £2,395 per square metre. Amazingly the most expensive area of England and Wales costs 25 times as much as in the cheapest area. Of course, the most expensive areas is located inside the M25, in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea where one square metre – an area barley bigger than the size of an old red phone box costs an eye watering £19,439. In a stark comparison Blaenau Gwent, which is in the South Wales valleys just outside of the Brecon Beacons, costs £777 per square metre.
Unsurprisingly, 19 of the top 20 most expensive area were in London, with the City of London, following Kensington and Chelsea and then Westminster and Camden topping the list. Barking and Dagenham was the least expensive London Borough area with an average square metre still costing £3,994.
